„People often say that humans have always eaten animals, as if it were a justification for continuing this practice. According to this logic, we should not try to prevent people from murdering other people since this has also been done since the earliest of times.” – Isaac Bashevis Singer
Ministry of Agriculture Against Dog Chaining Practice
In late March, a meeting of the representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, NGOs, animal shelters and veterinary inspection was held at the Ministry. The Croatian Chamber of Veterinarians and the Department of Small Practice Veterinarians presented their support for the Ministry’s stance against dog chaining practice, while oral support was expressed by the City Association. The NGOs are expecting concrete steps to be taken by the Ministry in support of their views against dog chaining.
Protect Dogs From Dogfighting

The latest example of breeding dogs for dogfighting in Zadar proves that dogfighting is very much alive in Croatia. Thus, we presented a demand to the Ministry of Agriculture to keep mandatory, in the Rulebook on Dangerous Dogs, the duty to castrate, socialize and train pit bull terriers and their crossbreeds from uncontrolled breeding sources; for their carers to be over the age of 21 and without previous criminal convictions, and all this in order to protect dogs against this horrible practice. We also suggested additional preventative measures.
Vegan Marathon Runner Wins Gold

Ana Štefulj delighted everyone in Kiev by winning gold for Croatia in the Balkan Marathon Championship with one of the fastest times in the history of the race. Following her earlier successes, Ana achieved the fantastic result on a vegan diet which she credits for the win. We have previously reported on the increasing number of Croatian athletes, like their international colleagues, achieving top sports results while following a vegan diet.
Shelters’ Message: Can’t Buy Me Love

The Animal Protection Network organised a virtual stroll around animal shelters while promoting finding homes as part of their Can’t Buy Me Love campaign. During engaging interviews hosted by Mirna Dvoršćak, representatives of the Shelter Friends from Čakovec, shelter and safe haven Farmica from Našice and Pobjeda Association shelters from Osijek introduced viewers to their everyday life with sheltered animals and demonstrated why animals should not be purchased and why finding homes for a cat or a dog were the most noble options. If you’ve missed this online event, you can still see it on our Youtube channel.
Calf Saved in Earthquake Enjoys His Freedom
The irresistible calf named Borna, first born in freedom in Croatia, will soon turn four months and it’s already charmed us with its playful character during our recent visit to Farmica. Growing before our eyes, with the first multi-coloured horns coming out and being curious, playful and sociable while spending time in the company of other animals, Borna calls for compassion. We have reported many times of a large number of animals barely surviving in spaces so tight they cannot even turn around, eventually ending up in slaughterhouses. Anyone seeking to correct this injustice can do so by turning vegan.
