We marked the first day of spring, March 20th, with the appeal to stop eating meat through the Meatout campaign which has been celebrated worldwide ever since 1985. Check a video of us sharing free vegan food at Petar Preradovic Square in Zagreb, in cooperation with Vegan Thugz. Croatian newspaper Vecernji list joined us in the Meatout this year. In cooperation with us, it published a vegan cookbook as a gift to the readers of its daily newspaper!

Animal Protection Network ‘s 14th meeting

On March 10, our 14th meeting of the Animal Protection Network was held in our office, gathering 20 animal protection associations from all parts of Croatia. The topics of the meeting were the implementation of the Animal Protection Act and the use of good tools by local self-government to stop the suffering of animals and the irresponsibility of citizens. At the meeting, there was talk about permanent sterilization (spaying/neutering), control of microchiping, adoption instead of buying, and no kill shelters.

Don’t turn a blind eye, castrate

Encouraged by the alarming situation with abandoned animals in Croatia, overcrowded shelters, and homes of volunteers, the Animal Protection Network has launched a national project “Don’t turn a blind eye, castrate.” Awareness about the necessity of prescribing permanent sterilization will be spread with the help of billboards in Zagreb, Osijek and other cities.

Easter without eggs and ham

To encourage many citizens to spend Easter in the spirit of compassion, we published the online edition of cookbook Mljac (Yum). In the free cookbook you can find over 50 delicious recipes without meat, eggs and milk. Just during Easter holidays as much as 30 million pieces of eggs are sold in Croatia, and most of the consumers don’t even think how those eggs came to their plates…

After the preview in Osijek, organized by the association Victories, we organized the Zagreb premiere for the documentary film Invisibles by the director Andrea Cakic, made in collaboration with Croatian Radiotelevision. The film speaks about invisible animals and people who decided to notice them. The third preview of the film was held in Split.

Appointment for the Minister’s Advisor

Luka Oman
Animal Friends Croatia’s president Luka Oman has been appointed as a special advisor of the Minister of Agriculture for animal protection topics. Luka Oman’s advisory duty will be performed without the employment in the Ministry of Agriculture and without financial compensation.

News Flash

  • We have sent the appeal to evacuate animals along with humans in areas threatened by floods, for caretakers to protect their animals from the floods and for the competent institutions that, when evacuating, organize their care in a safe place.
  • We sent a letter to Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate requesting a ban on keeping and selling live animals (intended for human consumption) in stores.
  • We sent a letter to the Minister of the Interior affairs regarding the cases of placement of poison in Osijek, Zagreb and other cities in Croatia, asking for effective measures to solve this situation.
  • We have reacted to the circus tour in Cakovec to prevent the keeping of camels and other wild animals in the circus which is prohibited by the Animal Protection Act, and performance shows with domestic animals.
  • We gave a statement to a daily newspaper Glas Slavonije regarding the announcement of the killing of crows in urban areas, and on poaching and smuggling of protected animals, regarding the case of the 72-year-old man who caught the protected kestrel in a trap.
  • We continue to intensify the activities on implementation of the Animal Protection Act. We have held many meetings in the various Croatian cities during the past month and meetings of the committee for changing the legislation on animal protection.
